Waiting for the fourth wave of Ska!

scooterIs Ska dead? Can an entire musical genre and it’s cultural influence ever completely vanish? We think not.  So where is the fourth wave of Ska, and will it be better than the third?

Let’s face it, although the third wave produced some good music from many great bands like The Toasters (thought to be the first of the wave) , and the Mighty Might Bosstones there were no shortage of bad ones. (mostly in the mid 90’s).

In today’s dam break of over produced American Idol crap and the now long dead and utter destruction of MTV it’s a wonder any style can be formed with the masses being made ever dumber by tuning in, but it does.

So while we wait for the SK4 wave to get here check out this clip about the 2Tone era with The Specials, Madness, and Bad Manners.

  • Yeah Darren I agree the first video was to demo how bad some of the 3r wave bands were.

I think the narrator in the second one was talking about the first wave with that combo.

As a long-time ska fan, these videos trouble me...

The first one - yechh! I don't even want to talk about it.

The second one was pretty interesting, aside from the narrator claiming ska is the result of a combination of rocksteady and reggae...

The scene is in hibernation. There are still some great bands out there, but the barriers to entry are pretty high, which I think is a result of the pure amount of crap that was around in the scene ten years ago.

The best ska bands I find these days are from Europe or Canada, it seems.
