I think that after a while you can hear what is around you (or maybe it is my super ninja like hearing skills). I have not had any problems yet (save maybe my impromptu singing of "Big Poppa" at a stop light -big mexican guy crooning on scooter not a good sight). I even had a cool late night ride moment when "5:!5" came on my ipod- MODS RULE!!!! I ride with headphones everyday. I installed an inexpensive sound system with waterproof speakers on my scoot. I plug the iPod into the system and share my lack of musical taste with the rest of the world. The added "safety feature" is other drivers and pedestrians can hear me coming. If anyone is interested in adding a sound system, feel free to let me know.
